DevOps and Agile: What Every Scrum Master Needs to Understand

📅 2025 06⏱ 9 min read✍️ CREA Editorial

Agile without DevOps is a planning framework attached to a slow deployment pipeline. Scrum Masters who understand only ceremonies miss half the picture.

Why They Are Inseparable

Scrum asks teams to produce potentially shippable increments every sprint. If the deployment pipeline takes 3 weeks to release what the team built in 2, the increment is not actually shippable — it is just built. DevOps practices close that gap.

DevOps Practices That Directly Impact Sprint Delivery

DORA Metrics: The Four Measures of Delivery Performance

MetricWhat It MeasuresElite Performance
Deployment FrequencyHow often you deploy to productionMultiple times per day
Lead Time for ChangesCommit to production timeLess than 1 hour
Change Failure Rate% of deployments causing incidents0–5%
Mean Time to RecoveryRestoration time when failures occurLess than 1 hour

What Scrum Masters Should Do

You do not need to build pipelines — but you need to: know your team's DORA metrics and whether they improve; identify pipeline delays as impediments to escalate; facilitate conversations between developers and platform teams; and ensure the Definition of Done includes automated test coverage or pipeline checks.

SAFe Connection

SAFe 6.0 includes Continuous Delivery Pipeline as a core ART concept. RTEs are expected to understand where the pipeline constrains value flow — not just which teams are behind on stories. DORA metrics increasingly appear in RTE interviews at large technology organisations.
