How to Pass the CREA-SM Exam: Complete Study Plan and Tips

The CREA-SM exam is 80 scenario-based questions in 90 minutes. That is 67 seconds per question on average — enough time to read carefully and reason through, but not enough to hesitate on every one. This guide gives you everything you need to pass first time.

Understanding the CREA-SM Exam Format

The exam uses scenario-based questions, not recall questions. You will not be asked "How many values does Scrum have?" You will be asked "Your team's velocity has dropped by 30% over three consecutive sprints. A stakeholder is demanding you add two new developers immediately. What is the most appropriate action as Scrum Master?" The difference matters significantly for how you prepare.

Topic Weighting

Based on the CREA-SM curriculum, expect roughly this distribution across the 80 questions:

• Scrum foundations and Scrum Master role — approximately 25 questions
• Facilitation, coaching, and impediment management — approximately 20 questions
• Scaling frameworks (SAFe, LeSS, Nexus, Scrum@Scale) — approximately 15 questions
• Agile tools (Jira, ADO, Rally) — approximately 12 questions
• Metrics and reporting — approximately 8 questions

The 2-Week Study Plan

Days 1-3: Foundations

Complete Module 1 (Agile and Scrum Foundations) fully. Do not rush — the Cynefin framework, Shu-Ha-Ri, and the 5 Scrum Values appear regularly in scenario questions. Read the Scrum Guide (2020 version) once completely.

Days 4-6: The SM Role and Coaching

Module 2 is the most scenario-rich section. Focus on the three coaching models (GROW, OSCAR, T-GROW) and understand when each applies. Memorise the 5 Dysfunctions of a Team — they appear in multiple question formats.

Days 7-8: Tools and Scaling

Module 3 (Tools) and Module 4 (Scaling) back to back. For tools, focus on JQL and the four Jira reports. For scaling, use the 14-dimension comparison table as your revision anchor.

Days 9-10: Metrics

Module 5. Understand the four burndown patterns and what each signals. Know Little's Law. Practice interpreting a Cumulative Flow Diagram — draw it by hand if needed.

Days 11-12: Practice Tests

Complete Practice Test 1 (30 questions). Review every wrong answer before attempting Practice Test 2. Do not just note what the right answer is — understand why your chosen answer was wrong.

Days 13-14: Full Mock Exam

Sit the full 80-question mock under exam conditions — timed, no interruptions, no notes. Score below 70%: spend day 14 on your weakest topic area. Score 70%+: light review and rest before the real exam.

The Six Exam Traps

• Trap 1 — The SM is not a manager. Any answer that has the SM making decisions for the team is almost always wrong.
• Trap 2 — Process over people. When in doubt, the answer that prioritises team health over process compliance is usually correct.
• Trap 3 — Immediate escalation. Escalating an impediment to management is rarely the first correct action — the SM should attempt to resolve it first.
• Trap 4 — Adding resources fixes velocity. It does not. Adding people to a Scrum team mid-sprint typically reduces velocity initially.
• Trap 5 — Changing the Sprint Goal mid-sprint. This almost always requires cancelling the sprint, not modifying it.
• Trap 6 — Skipping retrospectives under pressure. The Retrospective is never optional — the correct answer will never suggest skipping it to save time.
