Every major Agile certification now offers an online exam option — but the experience, security, and employer perception differ significantly across providers. This guide covers what to expect from online Agile exams and which credentials are best suited to remote study and testing.
Online vs In-Person Agile Certification
| Factor | In-person (training course) | Online (exam only) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | £895–£2,000+ | £95–£495 |
| Flexibility | Fixed dates, travel required | Study at your own pace, exam anytime |
| Networking | Yes — cohort learning | None |
| Exam rigour | Often lower (course pass rate 95%+) | Higher — no attendance credit |
| Best for | Beginners or employer-funded training | Experienced practitioners; self-funders |

How to Study for an Online Agile Certification
Step 1 — Create your study environment: Dedicated study time (not "I'll fit it in"), a distraction-free space, and a note-taking system. Agile certification study is active (scenario practice), not passive (reading).
Step 2 — Use the right resources: For CREA-SM: CREA exam platform module content + Scrum Guide 2020 + SAFe Big Picture (free online). For PSM I: Scrum Guide only + Mikhail Lapshin's free open assessments.
Step 3 — Practice scenarios, not definitions: Online Agile exams at the CREA-SM level test application, not recall. For every concept you study, ask: "In what situation would this apply? What are the trade-offs?" This is exam practice and real-world preparation simultaneously.
Step 4 — Simulate exam conditions: Before sitting the real exam, complete a full 80-question practice run in 90 minutes without pausing. Time pressure is the main differentiator — not content knowledge.
