PMP vs Agile Certifications in 2025: Which Should Project Managers Get?

📅 2025 Jun⏱ 10 min read✍️ CREA Editorial

PMP (Project Management Professional) remains the world's most recognised project management credential. Agile certifications — CSM, CREA-SM, PMI-ACP — are increasingly demanded by employers. If you are a project manager in 2025, you need to understand how these credentials stack up and which combination actually advances your career.

The Fundamentals: What Each Credential Proves

What PMP Actually Tests in 2025

PMI updated the PMP exam in 2021 to include approximately 50% Agile and hybrid content. The exam now tests predictive (waterfall), Agile, and hybrid approaches in roughly equal measure. If you already hold PMP, you have covered more Agile content than many Scrum Master candidates realise.

Important: PMP's Agile content is surface-level compared to a dedicated Scrum certification. PMP teaches you that Agile exists and how it fits in a portfolio. CREA-SM teaches you how to actually run Agile delivery.

PMI-ACP: The Bridge Credential

PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner) is the most rigorous Agile credential PMI offers. It tests across multiple Agile frameworks — Scrum, Kanban, XP, Lean, Crystal — and requires demonstrated Agile project experience. It is the right choice for project managers who want to demonstrate Agile depth while retaining PMI brand recognition. Cost is £360–£520 plus study materials.

The PM-to-SM Transition Path

More project managers are transitioning into Scrum Master roles as organisations shift to Agile. The challenge is that PM experience does not automatically map to SM competency — PMs are typically used to managing timelines and resources, whereas SMs coach teams and remove impediments without direct authority.

Recommended transition path:

  1. Get CREA-SM (or CSM if employer-funded) — establishes Agile credibility quickly
  2. Shadow an existing SM on a live Scrum team for one sprint cycle
  3. Apply to "Scrum Master / Project Manager" hybrid roles to bridge the gap
  4. Add PMI-ACP within 12 months to satisfy PMP-holding hiring managers

Which Combination Wins in 2025?

For maximum marketability: PMP + CREA-SM. PMP satisfies enterprise hiring requirements and PMO credibility. CREA-SM demonstrates practical Agile delivery competency. Combined cost is under £600 (assuming existing PMP), and the two credentials cover both waterfall and Agile delivery environments comprehensively.
