What Does an RTE Actually Do?
The RTE is the servant leader for the Agile Release Train (ART), typically serving 5–12 teams working on a shared programme increment. Core responsibilities:
- PI Planning facilitation: Organising and running the 2-day event that aligns all teams on the next programme increment
- ART Sync facilitation: Bi-weekly Scrum of Scrums and PO Sync to identify cross-team dependencies and impediments
- Impediment removal: Escalating cross-team blockers that individual Scrum Masters cannot resolve
- Metrics and visibility: Tracking programme-level predictability, PI objectives delivery rate, and team health
- Release coordination: Working with DevOps and platform teams on continuous delivery pipeline readiness
- Stakeholder management: Communicating programme status, risks, and decisions to Business Owners and senior leadership
