Remote Daily Scrum
15 minutes maximum. Video for SM and team always. Jira or Trello board visible to all during the call. Move discussion topics to parking lot immediately. Consider async update tools (Geekbot, Standuply) for teams spanning more than 3 hours of time zone difference.
Remote Sprint Planning
Use collaborative boards (Miro, MURAL, Confluence Whiteboard) with pre-populated story cards. PO presents the sprint goal and walks top backlog items before Part 2. Use breakout rooms for sub-group decomposition. Record the sprint goal on a persistent shared artifact — Confluence page or pinned Slack message.
Remote Retrospectives: Psychological Safety
- Use anonymous contribution tools (FunRetro, EasyRetro) for data gathering so team members can surface sensitive topics without attribution pressure
- Rotate formats — 4Ls, Start-Stop-Continue, Sailboat, Mad-Sad-Glad — to prevent ceremony fatigue
- Check in individually before the retro if you sense team tension
- End with committed actions (owner + date), not just identified problems
Virtual PI Planning
- Run a pre-PI sync 2–3 days before to distribute business context asynchronously
- Use virtual breakout rooms by ART team for team planning sessions
- Digital program board tools (SAFe Team Connect, Miro) must be set up and tested one week before
- Reserve synchronous time for dependency identification and management review
Team Health Monitoring
Run a team health survey every quarter minimum — 5 Dysfunctions or Spotify Squad Health Check. Track engagement signals: camera usage, ceremony participation, channel response time. Early warning signs of disengagement surface in data before they surface in conversations.
