📅 2025 Jun⏱ 9 min read✍️ CREA Editorial

Scaled Agile offers two Scrum Master certifications within the SAFe framework: SSM (SAFe Scrum Master) and SASM (SAFe Advanced Scrum Master). Both cover the SAFe world — but at very different depths. Here is how to decide which to pursue.

What SSM Covers

SSM provides a comprehensive introduction to the Scrum Master role within a SAFe Agile Release Train. You will learn how to facilitate Scrum events at team level, support PI Planning, and operate within the SAFe portfolio and programme constructs. It is the right starting point if you have not previously worked in a SAFe environment.

What SASM Adds

SASM extends SSM with coaching skills, team dynamics, and facilitation techniques for complex multi-team environments. It covers Lean-Agile coaching, conflict resolution, and how to coach the ART as a whole rather than just your team. It is the right choice if you already hold SSM and want to move toward Agile Coach or RTE.

Sequence advice: SSM first, then SASM 12–18 months later when you have PI Planning experience. Jumping straight to SASM without SSM context wastes the depth of the advanced content.

How CREA-SM Compares

CREA-SM costs £119 (no training required) versus SSM at approximately £1,500–£2,000 all-in. Both cover PI Planning, ART dynamics, and SAFe roles. The key difference is that CREA-SM covers all major scaling frameworks (not just SAFe), includes enterprise tooling modules, and has no annual renewal fee.

For practitioners in organisations using SAFe, the optimal combination is CREA-SM (broad enterprise foundation) + SAFe SSM (vendor-specific credential for job requirements) — total cost still lower than SASM alone.
